Once you have selected your software you will need to pick a theme. There are generally lots of themes available but before you decide to make one yours you should make sure that none of your competitors are using the same one.

When you have completed your website you will need to organise hosting and DNS hosting. Cheap is not necessarily best when it comes to hosting. Think about what how things will work if you need support or if you need someone to make or load backups etc.

Once your site is live you will probably need to think about getting some statistical data in terms of traffic, bounce rates and time spent on your website. A good option for these is to set up Google Analytics and Google Webmaster tools. Make sure that you do your research into how to set it up properly to get the most useful data.

If you do a bit of research and learn how to do the basics it can be a lot of fun to make your own website. It can also be quite time consuming while you are also trying to run a small business. I think its a false economy to create your own website. Unless you are a skilled designer/developer you are going to have to spend weeks trying to work everything out.
