The problem with DIY website builders


Hi 123 2 WEB Blog readers, In the last few weeks there has been quite a lot of publicity for DIY website building systems for small businesses. Basically, a small business person uses the tool to create a site using a standard template and gets it online in a relatively short period of time.

The problem that I see with any DIY job is that it is always more difficult than you originally anticipate or it takes a lot more hard work to get a job as good as the professionals can achieve.

My approach with DIY around the house is that I am happy to do the labouring work but when it comes to the finishing I always get a professional in to give the job that perfect look. The same can be said for home car repairs, I am comfortable changing a wheel or a set of brakes however I'm sure the car would be making strange noises if I was to put in a new clutch or gearbox.

The same applies to web development and building a site for your small business. If you employ a decent web design company they will have a designer, an editor, a person who can take care of your SEO (search engine optimization) etc. If you are a local mechanic, florist or dance instructor, even if you have all of these skills plus the general IT skills that you need to get a website established you probably won’t have the time available to create the best copy, select the best photographs and do the proper research that you need to do to get the most out of your SEO.

I think the biggest issue is understanding how SEO works. You might build yourself a nice looking website but people may not be able to find it.
